Patients and Physicians for Rx Access Applauds

Catamaran's Plan to Cover Compounded Medications in 2015
Patients and Physicians for Rx Access formed less than
six months ago to address sweeping changes in insurance coverage for compounded medications, resulting in loss of patient and prescriber access to those essential medications. As our Coalition worked to educate patients, pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare organizations, many insurance companies and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) continued to announce plans limit or remove coverage for compounded medications.
Today, we are now pleased to share great news for patients who depend on compounded medications and pharmacies that dispense these medications.
Catamaran, the nation's third largest PBM, recently announced a plan which will continue compounded medication coverage for their members in 2015.
To announce the decision, Catamaran sent a letter to pharmacies participating in the Catamaran Network announcing a credentialing program that will allow pharmacies meeting certain requirements to offer compounded medications to patients. Catamaran has chosen United Compounding Management (UCM) to administer the program.
In a media advisory sent out today, Jay McEniry, executive director of Patients and Physicians for Rx Access says: "We applaud Catamaran for its innovative plan to address the medication needs of millions of patients across the country. Catamaran has shown real industry leadership by working with other stakeholders to find solutions for patients needing compounded medications. We call on other insurance companies and PBMs, such as Express Scripts, CVS Caremark, Optum Rx, Cigna and Harvard Pilgrim, to follow Catamaran's lead in finding innovative ways to provide coverage for these essential medications."
McEniry adds, "when shopping for health insurance for 2015, businesses and individuals should consider plans in which the pharmacy benefit is administered by Catamaran. Before you select a health plan for 2015, consider if that plan includes coverage for compounded medications. If your insurance is provided through your employer (or that of your spouse or parent), ask the employer's benefits manager to consider insurance plans that include coverage for compounded medications at the policy renewal date."
According to the letter, pharmacies wishing to participate in the new Catamaran Network Compounding Credentialing Program should contact UCM at 18882405156 or www.ucmrx.com
