Proventec plc (AIM:PROV, Alternext:ALPTC), a provider of specialist cleaning and coatings technologies, is pleased to announce it has received an initial £450,000 order from the Scottish NHS for its specialist steam cleaning machines.

Commenting on the importance of addressing infections in Scottish hospitals, the Scottish Health Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, said: "Tackling healthcare-associated infections is my top priority because it is vital that the public have confidence in the care they will receive if they need hospital treatment. Steam cleaning is a particularly effective way of cleaning areas affected by Clostridium difficile and substantially increasing the number of steam cleaners available to the NHS will ensure they are available locally when needed."

This is Proventec's first order from the Scottish NHS and was received shortly after the Company recently won the HCAI ("Healthcare Acquired Infections Innovations") award from the Department of Health for its contribution to enhancing the cleanliness of the hospital environment.

In addition, the Company is also pleased to announce it recently won a £99,200 competitive Research & Development contract from the NHS National Institute for Health Research, through a Healthcare Associated Infections competition. This contract, part of the UK Small Business Research Initiative ("SBRI") program, is to develop a novel hand hygiene technology. The Company will receive the funds on completion of the first phase of development and assessment of its design in September 2009. The Company has already started development and it is expected that it will take six months to complete the technology and conduct the first phase of performance trials and user evaluation studies. The R&D evaluation is being conducted in association with Campden Chorleywood Food Research Agency and the Royal College of Nurses.

David Chestnutt, Chief Executive of Proventec, said: "We are delighted to be working with the Scottish NHS, which has recognised the value of our technology in combating healthcare acquired infections. Following successful implementation of this initial order, we hope to receive further orders from the NHS in Scotland.

"We are also pleased that the SBRI has identified Proventec as a developer of innovative technology. We look forward to expanding our portfolio of products to include hand hygiene, which is one of the key areas we need to target to prevent the spread of infection."
