Oyu Tolgoi Is Carrying Out Technical Rehabilitation on 187 hectares of Land Damaged by Irresponsible Mining In Darkhan-Uul Province
Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Government Implementing Agency Forestry Department, Darkhan-Uul Governor’s Office, and Oyu Tolgoi signed a cooperation agreement on 24 November 2023.
Within the framework of this cooperation agreement, Oyu Tolgoi is carrying out technical rehabilitation on 187 hectares of land damaged and destroyed by irresponsible mining in four locations of Tsagaan Khutul, Ikh Noyon Valley, Baga Noyon Valley, and Khurgad Valley areas in Khongor soum of Darkhan-Uul province. The technical rehabilitation has begun on 27 April 2024.
On the opening ceremony, the Minister of Environment and Tourism B.Bat-Erdene expressed his gratitude towards Oyu Tolgoi’s environmental initiatives, emphasizing that, "Mending the planet for the benefit of future generations is a significant contribution."
General Manager of the Health, Safety, Environment, and Security at Oyu Tolgoi Philip Abraham states, "Today serves as proof of what can be achieved through collaborative efforts. By working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, we have commenced our second large rehabilitation project. Through our rehabilitations, we are restoring rivers and mountains. I view this as a testament to our successful cooperation. Oyu Tolgoi is committed to creating a positive impact at every corner of Mongolia, extending beyond the mine area.”
Governor of Darkhan-Uul province, B.Azjargal emphasized the importance of rehabilitation of damaged areas within the framework of the "Green Darkhan-2032" programme and expressed his gratitude for the cooperation between Oyu Tolgoi and local stakeholders.
As part of its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, Oyu Tolgoi has joined the "Billion Trees" national movement, setting a goal of planting 100 million trees by 2030. By investing in rehabilitation and building partnerships with local communities, we can contribute creating a greener and more sustainable Mongolia.
