May 27 (Bloomberg) -- China ranks first among 22 emerging Asian economies as the country most likely to maintain steady and rapid growth over the next five years, according to the Bloomberg Economic Momentum Index for Developing Asia.
China scored 76.2 percent in a ranking of 16 areas including economic competition, education level, urban migration, high-technology exports and inflation that measure a country’s ability to continue delivering high growth. India was second with a score of 64.1 percent followed by Vietnam at 61.9 percent. Timor-Leste was last at 25.3 percent.

May 27 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks advanced, helping the MSCI World Index pare its weekly loss, and commodities climbed after leaders of the Group of Eight said the global economy is gaining strength and South Korea’s current-account surplus widened. The dollar weakened, while Japanese bonds rallied. The MSCI World Index rose 0.7 percent at 4:10 p.m. in Tokyo, leaving the gauge little changed for the week. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 0.2 percent. Oil increased 0.6 percent in New York, copper rose 1.9 percent, while wheat rallied for a third day. The Dollar Index sank 0.8 percent, set for its biggest drop since April 20. The won gained 0.6 percent and the euro added 0.8 percent versus the U.S. currency. Japan’s 10-year government bond yield fell three basis points.

Daily Bell: Dollar going up or down long term?
Rick Rule: Long term it is hopeless. Hopeless. I think it is going much lower. It is widely reported that what you are seeing now is a race to the bottom. We have talked about this in prior interviews. The world's reserve currency is still the United States dollar and the United States is still, despite the fact that it is weaker, the world's mouth. We are the consumer that everybody looks to and if the Chinese are determined not to let the renminbi appreciate too much against the dollar, the rest of the world has no choice but to appreciate.
Japan can't lose her competitive position relative to China in the US export market, so they have to devalue. From my point of view, all currencies go lower. I see the only currencies in the world that don't have a domestic political constituency for devaluation being gold and silver.
Daily Bell: How long a run will gold and silver have? Another five years? Another ten?
Rick Rule: That is a question I am ill prepared to answer. I don't think it will be as fast as many people think it could be. I forget who said during the 70's run that there's a lot of ruin left in a country the size of the United States. I think we have a slow motion train wreck not a rapid train wreck and I think gold's upward move will be in fits and starts but steady.
Daily Bell: Is silver a better investment than gold?
Rick Rule: I think in the near-term, silver probably is. My new nominal boss, Eric Sprott, has done a lot of work on the amount of physical silver that is currently available in the world to meet near term investment demand and the picture that he paints is very bullish for silver.
Daily Bell: Will the historical 15/1 ratio reassert itself?
Rick Rule: I don't really understand those ratios. I think they are irrelevant myself. There are a lot of people who like technical ratios because they need precision in their minds to help make decisions, but I think the world is much more chaotic than anything that would be represented in the context of those ratios. I think some of the things that impact the price of silver and are relative to the price of gold are esoteric, like the price of base metals. When the price of base metals is high, more bi-product silver gets produced. There are many more manufacturing and fabrication uses for silver and those types of variables don't fit neatly into a performance curve that would suggest the ratios are necessarily valid.
Daily Bell: What investment criteria do you use these days?
Rick Rule: Same as always, risk adjusted, net present value. We are fundamental investors. I don't have anything against technical analysis, I just don't understand it. I'm not a creature of markets, I think markets are a facility for buying and selling fractional ownership in businesses represented by shares or fractional participation of debt represented by loans or bonds. We have employed the same discipline for 30 years – nothing changes for us.

Finance Minister Bill English has spoken to the Chinese investors who have reportedly set aside $6 billion to invest in New Zealand. English said he met with the top brass of Chinese Investment Corporation (CIC) about a month ago. He also met with political leaders and cash lenders in Singapore and Hong Kong this week. ''They've [CIC] got literally trillions of dollars. It's quite possible that they have allocated a very, very small amount of it to New Zealand. But we're not familiar with the numbers, we haven't had that sort of direct discussion with them,'' English said. The New Zealand dollar rose to its highest level against the greenback in just over three years after a report yesterday that CIC was lining up $6 billion of spending on New Zealand bonds and assets. English said CIC was ''interested in taking part in our bonds tenders''. ''There is increasing interest there, particularly in the last three or four months,'' English said.

Daar schreven wij al maanden geleden over, begrijpen spaarvormen, in het verleden waren er dagelijks opvraagbare spaargelden, 3 - 6 maanden en 1 en 2 jaars vastgeld. Ook konden deposito's voor daggeld (grotere bedragen) bij de Centrale Bank (Rabo) en 't Hoofdkantoor Commerciële banken neergezet worden en dan had je 't voor het grootste deel gehad. Waar vielenn bij de DSB de grootste klappen? Bij die niet begrijpelijke spaarvormen.
Wie begrijpt er nog veel van al die producten in in de markt gezet zijn?
Waarom is in de mid-jaren negentig, toen de kredietrestrictie werd afgeschaft, de kredietcrisis geboren(lees 't begin ervan)?
Toen was er Landenrapportage en het risico moest duidelijk geraporteerd worden aan de DNB, aan wie en welk land dat uitgeleend was en welke zekerheid er aan ten grondslag lag. De CDO CLO's e.a. producten waren zo verpakt, dat niemand eigenliojk de inhoud (lees aan wie er uitgeleend was, en welke zekerheid er was). Dat moet toch eens fout gaan. Ook op die vraag en verwijzing naar andere producten (10-1-2008 15.10 uur) hebben wij van de DNB nimmer een compleet antwoord gekregen. De AFM zou 't overnemen en dan weet je 't wel.

Reuters) - Ratings agency Fitch on Friday cut its outlook on Japan's sovereign debt, warning that the vast cost of a March earthquake and tsunami and the still-unknown bill for the clean-up after the nuclear disaster would further strain the country's already shaky public finances.The Fitch move means all three major ratings agencies now have their fingers poised on the trigger to downgrade Japan's credit status unless they see moves by the government to strengthen the country's finances.Fitch cut its outlook to negative from stable and affirmed its AA minus local currency rating, its fourth highest and the same level as S&P's but one notch below Moody's Aa2.

ANN ARBOR (AFN) - Het consumentenvertrouwen in de Verenigde Staten is in mei gestegen ten opzichte van april. De index van de Universiteit van Michigan die het vertrouwen weergeeft steeg van 69,8 in april tot 74,3 in mei. Dat werd vrijdag bekendgemaakt. De stjging was groter dan verwacht. Door persbureau Reuters geraadpleegde economen rekenden op een indexstand van 72,4. De economen gingen ervan uit dat dit eindcijfer ongewijzigd zou zijn van een eerder gemeld voorlopig cijfer.De toename in mei is volgens de onderzoekers onder meer te danken aan de werkgelegenheid. Er kwamen meer banen, waardoor consumenten de hogere prijzen voor onder meer brandstoffen vergaten. Consumenten verwachten een aanhoudend hoge inflatie, aldus de universiteit, maar wel een die minder hoog is dan eerder werd verwacht.
