April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Japan’s sovereign-rating outlook was cut to “negative” by Standard & Poor’s as the nation’s reconstruction needs following last month’s earthquake will likely add to what’s already the world’s biggest debt load. The outlook on Japan’s local-currency debt rating, at AA-, the fourth-highest grade, was lowered from “stable,” S&P said in a statement today. The company had reduced the rating by one step in January in the first cut since 2002. Moody’s Investors Service said last month the disaster may bring forward the “tipping point” for the country’s bond market.

April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Australian consumer prices gained the most in five years last quarter, driving the nation’s currency to a record on bets the central bank will resume raising interest rates. The consumer price index rose 1.6 percent from the previous three months, the biggest jump since 2006 and higher than the forecasts of all 26 economists in a Bloomberg survey, the Bureau of Statistics said in Sydney today. The increase was led by food prices driven up by a cyclone and floods in Queensland state, and costlier fuel bills.

Reuters) - U.S. healthcare conglomerate Johnson & Johnson is expected to announce a $21.5 billion deal to buy Swiss medical device maker Synthes Inc on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. The deal is expected to value Synthes at 159 swiss francs ($180.51) a share, the Journal said, citing one person familiar with the matter. Shares of Synthes closed at 146.50 Swiss francs on Tuesday. Buying Synthes would be J&J's biggest acquisition, giving it a leading position in equipment to treat trauma and fractures.

AMSTERDAM (AFN) - Navigatiebedrijf TomTom heeft zijn omzetverwachting voor heel 2011 verlaagd, vanwege tegenvallende inkomsten uit losse navigatiekastjes. Dat maakte TomTom woensdag bekend.De omzet daalde in het eerste kwartaal op jaarbasis met 1 procent tot 265 miljoen euro. TomTom rekent nu op een jaaromzet van 1,425 tot 1,475 miljard euro.De Europese markt ontwikkelde zich min of meer zoals verwacht, aldus TomTom. De Noord-Amerikaanse markt vertoonde echter richting het einde van het eerste kwartaal een negatieve trend.De operationele winst steeg met 7 procent tot 18 miljoen euro. Het nettoresultaat steeg van 3 miljoen euro een jaar geleden tot 11 miljoen euro. TomTom handhaaft zijn verwachting dat de winst per aandeel in 2011 min of meer gelijk zal zijn aan die in 2010.

Excluding one-time items and inventory changes, earnings fell to $5.37 billion from $5.6 billion a year earlier. BP was expected to earn $5.6 billion on this basis.

LUXEMBURG (AFN) - De industrie in de eurozone heeft in februari 0,9 procent meer orders gekregen dan in januari. Op jaarbasis nam de werkvoorraad met 21,3 procent toe. Dat blijkt uit woensdag gepubliceerde cijfers van statistiekbureau Eurostat. In Nederland steeg het aantal orders ten opzichte van januari met 2 procent en in vergelijking met februari 2010 met 23 procent. De cijfers over de eurozone vallen zowel op maand- als op jaarbasis enigszins tegen. Economen rekenden in doorsnee op een toename van het aantal orders met 1 procent op maand- en 21,8 procent op jaarbasis. Exclusief schepen, spoor- en ruimtevaartgoederen, waarvoor het orderverloop wat grilliger is, namen de orders in februari met 0,6 procent toe op maandbasis en met 20,8 procent op jaarbasis.
