The central bank continues to add liquidity, with money supply rising 19 percent in November from a year ago, according to the median estimate of 29 analysts in a Bloomberg News survey before a government release this month. That needs to be curbed to 15 percent to 16 percent to rein in inflation, said Fred Hu, the former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. chief China economist who has founded financial advisory firm Primavera Capital Group.

Under the deal being discussed, Bright Food would purchase GNC for $2.5 billion to $3 billion, a source familiar with the situation said late on Monday in the United States. The potential acquisition of Pittsburgh-based GNC, which is owned by Ares Management and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board, could be announced in the next few days, said the source who declined to be identified because the talks were not public. A spokesman for Shanghai-based Bright Food Group had no comment.

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Treasury Department sold its remaining stock in Citigroup Inc. for $10.5 billion, bringing the country’s third-biggest bank a step closer to independence from the government following a $45 billion bailout in 2008. The Treasury said it disposed of 2.4 billion shares at $4.35 each, compared with yesterday’s closing price of $4.45 on the New York Stock Exchange. The sale helps Citigroup exit the 2008 bailout, which was provided to keep the New York-based bank from collapsing as its stock sank below $5 and some depositors started withdrawing their money. Citigroup also had to get $301 billion of government guarantees on its riskiest assets, making the bailout the biggest among U.S. banks.

ING ceases to rebalance its hedge portfolio
ING Groep N.V. announced today that it will no longer rebalance its hedge portfolio, which was used to hedge employee options and facilitate employee share programmes. This decision is an effort to simplify the management and administration of ING's various employee share and option programmes.
The delta hedge portfolio currently holds 47.7 million (depositary receipts for) ordinary ING shares, representing 1.2% of the 3,832 million shares outstanding. This portfolio will be used to fund the obligations arising from the various employee share and option programmes.

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Sanofi-Aventis SA is unwilling to meet demands by Genzyme Corp. to raise its $18.5 billion offer and make a later payment based on sales goals for the drug Campath, said three people with direct knowledge of the matter. The board of Sanofi, France’s biggest pharmaceutical company, would be open to one of the concessions, but not both, said the people, who declined to be identified because the deliberations are confidential. While executives of the companies aren’t in talks, their advisers have been in contact, the people said. Sanofi must decide this week whether to extend its hostile tender offer at $69 a share, raise the bid, or walk away if it doesn’t win support from enough Genzyme shareholders. The offer for the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company expires at midnight on Dec. 10.

Output rose 0.6 percent from September, the most in seven months, the Office for National Statistics said today in London. The median forecast of 23 economists in a Bloomberg News survey was for an increase of 0.3 percent. Overall industrial output fell 0.2 percent as utilities and mines cut production.

REYKJAVIK (AFN) - De IJslandse economie is in het derde kwartaal ten opzichte van het kwartaal ervoor met 1,2 procent gegroeid. Dat maakte het IJslandse bureau voor de statistiek dinsdag bekend. Het is de eerste kwartaalgroei sinds het derde kwartaal van 2008. IJsland kwam na de financiële crisis in een diepe recessie terecht. De economie is sindsdien met meer dan 13 procent gekrompen.
De groei werd mede gestuwd door een toename van de consumptie. IJslandse huishoudens spendeerden in het afgelopen kwartaal 3,8 procent meer dan in het kwartaal ervoor.

In de VS, Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Job openings in the U.S. rose in October for the first time in three months, reaching the highest level in two years, a government report showed. Openings increased by 351,000 to 3.36 million, the most since August 2008, the Labor Department said today in Washington. The number of people hired decreased from the prior month and separations also fell. Today’s report underscores government figures that showed the economy gained 172,000 jobs in October, the biggest payroll increase in five months. A Labor Department report last week showed the world’s largest economy last month created fewer jobs than forecast and the jobless rate climbed.
