Reuters) - The Federal Reserve could end up buying more than the $600 billion in U.S. government bonds it has committed to purchase if the economy fails to respond or unemployment stays too high, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said.
The Fed will regularly review the policy and could adjust the amount of buying up or down depending on the economy's path, he added. In a rare televised interview, Bernanke told the CBS program "60 Minutes" the Fed's actions are aimed at supporting what is still a fragile economic recovery, dismissing critics who argue the policy will lead to future inflation. "This fear of inflation I think is way overstated," Bernanke said in the interview aired on Sunday.

Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Riversdale Mining Ltd., an Australian company developing coal mines in Africa, said it held talks with Rio Tinto Group on a possible A$3.5 billion ($3.46 billion) takeover proposal. “The company has had discussions with Rio Tinto concerning a possible transaction at the corporate level for indicative consideration” of A$15 for each of Riversdale’s shares, the Sydney-based company said today in a statement. It rose to the highest in a decade to close at A$16.31 at 4:10 p.m. Sydney time. “We note the statement,” Rio Tinto spokeswoman Karen Halbert said by phone today. She declined to comment further.

The plans are still in the exploratory stage and Yahoo has not been contacted, the sources said. The plans are also fraught with complications involving myriad moving pieces but would entail breaking apart AOL's two main business: its legacy dial-up Internet service and display advertising business. In many respects, the latest discussions are derivative of plans contemplated back in 2008 and 2009 before Time Warner spun off AOL to Time Warner shareholders. AOL has continued to explore a break up option since the December 2009 spin off.

Reuters) - Google Inc has agreed to buy Seattle-based anti-piracy software firm Widevine in a bid to boost its online video services, the world's dominant Internet search company said on its official blog.
No price was disclosed, but the software firm has raised more than $65 million from investors including Cisco Systems, the Seattle Times reported on Friday.
Widevine's digital-rights management software is used by 250 million Web-connected TVs and other Web-connected devices to protect video content from unauthorized use, the Seattle Times said.

The rain may cut the quality of more than 40 percent of the country’s wheat crop, according to estimates by National Australia Bank Ltd. Rio Tinto Group, the world’s third-largest mining company, said today coal mines in central Queensland state had partially resumed operation after rains. Wheat futures in Chicago rallied to the highest level in four months on concern that the weather in Australia, the fourth-largest shipper, may reduce global supply of high-quality milling grain. The rain had wiped as much as A$500 million ($496 million) off the expected A$3.2 billion value of New South Wales winter crops, state Premier Kristina Keneally said today.

Reuters) - U.S. coal miner Massey Energy Co (MEE.N), which was rocked by a mine explosion in West Virginia early this year, will consider buying a coal company as an alternative to its ongoing takeover talks, the Wall Street Journal said. The departure of Massey Chief Executive Don Blankenship on Friday, has made it more likely that the company will opt for an acquisition instead of a sale, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. Blankenship, one of the most powerful U.S. coal industry leaders, said on Friday he would retire at the end of December, eight months after 29 miners died at one of Massey's mines in West Virginia. Massey, based in Richmond, Virginia, has been under increasing scrutiny by federal mine safety regulators since the April 5 explosion, the deadliest U.S. coal mining disaster in 40 years.

Reuters) - 3M Co (MMM.N) said it will buy Swiss precision grinding technology supplier Winterthur Technologies AG (WTGN.S) for about $448 million in an effort to provide a broader range of industrial grinding and finishing solutions. Under the agreement, the U.S.-based 3M will pay 62.00 Swiss francs ($63.56) for each share through a public tender offer and the offer is conditional upon a tendering of 66.67 percent of the shares of Winterthur. The deal, which is expected to close in the first-quarter of 2011, will slightly add to earnings, excluding items, in the first 12 months following the completion, the company said.

Reuters) - Candover Investments (CDI.L) said on Monday it had agreed to sell its private equity investment manager division to some of its directors as part of its plans to return cash to investors as it winds up the company.
Candover said it was selling up to 29 percent of its investments in the Candover Partners Ltd (CPL) portfolio to an entity backed by private equity fund Pantheon and the newly formed Arle Capital Partners for around 60 million pounds ($94.66 million). The company added that its chairman Gerry Grimstone would stand down once the disposals had been completed. DEN HAAG (AFN) - De handel in goud en zilver is sinds 2008 fors toegenomen. De gestegen waarde van de internationale goud- en zilverhandel is vooral het gevolg van de sterk gestegen prijzen. Dat blijkt uit maandag gepubliceerde cijfers van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS). De gemiddelde invoerprijs van goud lag in de eerste acht maanden van dit jaar op ruim 29 euro per gram. Dat is ruim 30 procent hoger dan in 2009. De uitvoerprijs van goud steeg met ongeveer 30 procent van 22 naar 29 euro per gram. De uitvoerprijs van een gram zilver steeg van 2008 op 2009 met 40 procent. Van 2009 op 2010 daalde de uitvoerprijs echter weer met 21 procent. Een gram goud was dit jaar 48 keer zo duur als een gram zilver.

Buiten is het hier misstig en op de beurzen lijkt dat ook wel zo te zijn.

Ackman and his Pershing Square Capital Management are known for making big and often noisy bets on undervalued companies. Ackman is ready to finance Borders' acquisition of Barnes & Noble for $16 a share, according to the filing, indicating a bid of around $964 million. Barnes & Noble put itself up for sale in August, and said it was meeting financial institutions as part of the auction process.

The trio are in the second round of bidding for the Rotterdam-based chemical distributor, which has been owned by ABN Amro's former private equity arm AAC Capital since 2005.Binding bids are due next week, one of the people said, adding Hellman & Friedman had also entered the second round of the auction but had dropped out. The private equity firms either declined to comment or were not available for comment. IMCD did not respond to a request for comment

De Toezichthouders mogen best wel eens de kleinere beleggers gaan beschermen. Als wat dan uit het netwerk beluisteren wat er kan en mag, daar snappen de kleine beleggers niets meer van.
Wel begrijpen zij, dat dit geen "normale en begrijpelijke" handel meer is.

Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- 3M Co.’s agreement to purchase grinding-tools maker Winterthur Technologie AG brings the company’s spending on acquisitions this year to at least $2 billion, the highest in a decade. Chief Executive Officer George Buckley has funneled money into acquisitions in 2010 as 3M adds to its health-care, security and industrial operations. The company has spent at least $6.47 billion since 2001, based on Bloomberg analysis of deals whose terms were disclosed. The previous high was $1.42 billion in 2007, data show. The $448 million purchase of Switzerland’s Winterthur will enhance 3M’s position in the $14 billion market for abrasives, the company said today. The 13 percent premium is less than the average 15 percent that St. Paul, Minnesota-based 3M paid in deals this year, data show.
