Hynix Semiconductor Inc.,
the world's second-largest memory chipmaker, said profit fell for the second straight quarter after a glut of computer chips drove down prices and the company incurred more expenses to pay debt. Third-quarter net income slid 56 percent to 168 billion won ($183 million), Ichon, South Korea-based Hynix said today.

Indonesia's debt ratings
were raised by Moody's Investors Service, saying the government had taken steps to improve its finances. The foreign- and local-currency bond ratings for Southeast Asia's largest economy were raised one notch to Ba3, three levels below investment grade, from B1, Moody's said in a statement in Singapore today.

Platinum rose to a record
in Asia after fatal accidents shut Northam Platinum Holdings Ltd.'s mine and led unions to prepare a strike in South Africa, which accounts for four-fifths of world output of the metal. Platinum for immediate delivery jumped as much as $18.25, or 1.3 percent, to a record $1,446.75 an ounce and traded at $1,444.25 an ounce as of 12:45 p.m. in Tokyo.

U.K. retail sales rose
more than economists forecast in September as stores resorted to the biggest discounts in almost three years to attract shoppers. Sales climbed 0.6 percent, after gaining 0.7 percent in August, the Office for National Statistics said today in London.

Pfizer Inc.,
the world's largest drugmaker, said third-quarter profit fell 77 percent on costs for ending sales of the diabetes treatment Exubera and competition from cheaper copies of its best-selling drugs.
