After years of continuous achievements, we are pleased to announce the commencement of production of our underground mine. This mine holds the majority of the total reserves of the Oyu Tolgoi deposits, so an underground mine has been constructed with cutting-edge technology, including extensive shaft infrastructure and 200 kilometres of 5-metre-diameter tunnels at a depth of 1,300 metres below the surface.

As we blast our 21st drawbell using the “block caving method” developed by the 150-year-old Rio Tinto Group, we proudly announce the grand opening of our underground mine production. Our team is committed to maximising the capacity of the underground mine development to achieve a peak production capacity of 500,000 tonnes of copper per year, with the aim of having hundreds of drawbells in operation by 2028-2036.
The Oyu Tolgoi mine is a result of a successful partnership and collaborative efforts between the Government of Mongolia and Rio Tinto. The establishment of a major player in the mineral resources industry not only in Mongolia but also on a global scale is now within reach.
