BMA renews partnership with CQUniversity to support First Nations students

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has renewed its long-standing partnership with CQUniversity for the First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program, driving better outcomes for Central Queensland First Nations students.

This new phase builds on our decade-long partnership and continues financial support for the Chair in Indigenous Engagement, First Nations-focused research projects and pathways, community engagement initiatives, and Indigenous scholarships.

Steve Johnston, BMA, said the partnership has a strong record of delivering good outcomes to First Nations communities in regional Queensland.

“We’re delighted to recommit to our successful partnership with CQUniversity. Over the next five years we will provide funding of more than $3.7 million to continue funding student scholarships, research projects and pathways, and community engagement initiatives led by the University’s Office of Indigenous Engagement and BMA Chair in Indigenous Engagement role.

“The First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program brings people and resources together to build a better world, by committing to working together to improve the livelihoods of First Nations people, setting up regional Queensland to be resilient and sustainable over the longer term. I am immensely proud to continue our partnership with the CQUniversity Office of Indigenous Engagement.”

In addition to our First Nations Tertiary Education and Research partnership, BMA has two other partnerships with CQUniversity – BMA Chair in Automation and Future Work Skills and the Queensland Future Skills partnership – which focus on supporting skills for the jobs of the future.

“These partnerships are an important aspect of how we help develop diversified and resilient local communities and economies, contributing to quality-of-life improvements that continue beyond the life of our operated assets.”

The commitment means that over the past decade and with the renewed partnership, BHP and BMA have invested more than $9 million dollars through CQUniversity to facilitate opportunities for education, training, community-led research, and educational inclusion for First Nations Peoples throughout regional Queensland.
