CSM (Accumulate): Newsflow on PLA
The facts: Comments from Indorama's management conference and update on CSM's lactides facility.
Our analysis: The Nation in Thailand reported on its website about the annual conference of Indorama Ventures, which has been talking with CSM about setting up a polylactic acid alliance. Indorama Ventures, the largest polyester producer in the world, is in the middle of a USD 3.8bn investment phase which should increase its capacity (for PTA, PET and polyester) by 10m tonnes by 2014. So far, the company has spent USD 1.5bn that has raised capacity by 6.5m tonnes.
Indorama CEO Aloke Lohia said that the company wants to diversify into biochemicals, which may be the next phase of its investment after 2014. Talks with CSM about the polylactic acid plant with an initial capacity of 10,000 tonnes are at an advanced stage. Mr. Lohia sees the plans as a good step for developing biochemicals soon.
CSM has announced the intention to form an alliance with Indorama Ventures on 23 February 2011. Since then, the company has said to have made progress, but has provided no tangible evidence. Any announcement on the formation of an alliance would be positive in our view.
The construction of CSM's 75,000 tonnes lactides facility in Thailand has been completed at the end of 2011. The factory is now producing lactides that are shipped to customers. We assume that the factory will start contributing to sales as of early 2012, but we assume a negative EBIT contribution in year one.
Conclusion & Action: The newsflow from CSM on lactides contracts and alliances has been disappointing, so a conclusion of an alliance with Indorama Ventures would be positive. CSM will report full-year 2011 earnings on 21 February. We expect to hear more about PLA and lactides on this occasion. We rate CSM shares Accumulate with a target price of EUR 15.

CSM zal rapporteren hele jaar 2011 inkomsten op 21 februari. We verwachten meer informatie over PLA en lactiden bij deze gelegenheid te horen. We tarief CSM aandelen Verzamel met een koersdoel van EUR 15.
Ook hier teleurstelling over het gebrek aan nieuws naar de investeerders toe door CSM.
Daar zullen wij CSM nogmaals opwijzen.
