- Announces connected innovations, customers and partnerships for street lighting, retail, offices and homes

Frankfurt, Germany – Philips Lighting, a Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) company and global leader in lighting, will showcase its global leadership in connected lighting systems that are transforming homes, offices, shops and streets into smart spaces across the world at Light + Building 2016. The company will introduce new products, systems, services and partnerships that further integrate lighting into IoT, enabling its customers to create new experiences and unlock new value from apps and services.

“We continually seek to improve the lives of our customers. Through our connected lighting systems we strive to provide the best lighting experiences and drive greater energy and cost efficiencies,” said Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting. “And by extending lighting into the Internet of Things we are unlocking even more value for our customers and partners through capabilities and services that go beyond illumination.”

Smart cities
Philips Lighting announced a new global partnership with Vodafone to help drive widespread adoption of wireless connected street lighting in cities across the world. To date, Philips CityTouch has reached 530 implementations across 33 countries, providing high quality light, energy savings and operational cost savings to form a digital backbone for smart cities. Enabling cities to benefit for LED lighting today and migrate to connected street lighting at their own pace, the company unveiled Philips DigiStreet, the first LED street light that is “future-proofed” with slots for sensors and wireless connectivity.

Smart retailing
Philips Lighting’s award-winning indoor positioning system is driving new location-based services in the retail space, helping to boost sales and customer loyalty. In response to customer needs, the company is extending its portfolio to provide a complete capability, comprised of lighting infrastructure and professional services. Accordingly, the company announced a partnership with US company Aisle411, a leader in digital store mapping, product search and shopper analytics. Working together with Aisle411, Philips Lighting will deliver the first connected lighting indoor positioning system in the Middle East for aswaaq, the UAE-based community retailer.

Smart offices
In offices, Philips Lighting provided an update on how its partnership with Cisco is helping to create more comfortable, sustainable and productive environments that benefit building owners, facility managers and office workers. Philips Lighting and Cisco are integrating connected lighting into the IoT for offices through a combination of Philips Power over Ethernet (PoE) connected lighting systems with Cisco’s secure IT networking infrastructure.

Smart homes
Adding to a comprehensive ecosystem of bulbs, luminaires, strips and controls, this spring Philips Lighting will launch Philips Hue white ambiance. Unlocking the power of white light by delivering every shade from cool daylight (6500k) to warm white (2200k), Philips Hue white ambience helps consumers wake up more naturally and fall asleep more peacefully, as well as enhance their day through the white light recipes featured on the Philips Hue app. With lighting as the centerpiece of the smart home, Philips Lighting helps drive the adoption of the IoT for homes by partnering with Dutch telecommunications KPN, French insurance firm AXA and French energy company ENGIE as well as with developers who have so far delivered more than 600 third-party apps for Philips Hue.

New innovative LED bulbs
Philips Lighting continues to innovate LED by launching ground-breaking bulbs that reinvent the halogen spotlight, the classic filament light bulb and the dimmable LED. Philips classic LED spot range is the first glass LED spot range that truly replaces the popular halogen spotlight. It has the same look and feel as a classic halogen spot light but is 90% more energy efficient than classic halogen technology. The arrival of this breakthrough product coincides with the EU phase out of GU10 halogen spotlights in September 2016. Philips SceneSwitch LED bulb range is unique in that it combines three light settings in one light bulb, meaning you can select the right light for your needs just by switching your existing wall switch on and off. Philips classic LED bulb range with filament has a nostalgic look and has been extended to include DimTone, meaning the more you dim, the warmer the light effect.

Philips and Vodafone join forces for connected lighting and smart city services

Frankfurt, Germany - Philips Lighting, a Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) company and the global leader in lighting, announced today a new agreement for Vodafone to become a global Internet of Things (IoT) managed connectivity partner. Under the agreement, the two companies will enable city authorities worldwide to implement connected street lighting systems which will be connected wirelessly, saving energy and making maintenance easier and more efficient.

The Philips CityTouch street lighting management system will use Vodafone’s world-leading machine-to-machine (M2M) network to connect individual light points. Every connected street lamp will contain a Vodafone M2M SIM. City authorities can then monitor and manage lighting through the user-friendly and highly flexible Philips CityTouch system while engineers will be able to check performance, identify faults and control the lighting remotely.

The joint offering allows city authorities to create an infrastructure that is easily scalable, and will be able to support other smart city applications in future.

Vodafone M2M Director, Erik Brenneis, said: “Lighting plays a key role in the smart city. Our agreement with Philips will see this technology transforming cities across the world backed by Vodafone's world-leading innovation, technologies and networks.”

Bill Bien, SVP, Head of Strategy and Marketing, at Philips Lighting added: “Just less than 12% of the world’s street lights are LED and less than 2% are connected. We are at the start of a new era which will see highly energy efficient connected street lighting become the backbone of most smart cities. Robust, reliable wireless connectivity will help make this happen, linking streetlights with sensors, devices and management systems. By partnering with Vodafone we can work together to take light beyond illumination, helping to make cities more energy efficient, more livable and giving people an increased sense of safety.”

About Philips CityTouch:
Philips CityTouch is an end-to-end street lighting management system that integrates connected devices and specialized services to transform cities’ lighting operations. Increasingly, street lights are connected and made intelligent using Philips CityTouch ready street luminaires or by adding a Philips CityTouch connector node to existing street luminaires. Such connectivity offers a number of benefits:
- Typically additional 30% energy savings above the typical 40%+ savings made by using LED lighting, as the connected lights can be dimmed or turned up as required – the right light level, at the right time, in the right place.
- Reduced maintenance cost and time from days to hours as real-time information on the status of each light point is relayed to the operator who can schedule crews to a precise location. No more driving around looking for faults.
- Network setup and commissioning happens automatically and when the CityTouch ready luminaire or a connector node is installed it starts transmitting location data and operational information securely over the Vodafone network.

Shopping at light speed in Dubai, with Philips Lighting

- Philips Lighting wins first connected lighting indoor positioning retail project in the Middle East with United Arab Emirates supermarket aswaaq
- Lighting system enables aswaaq to offer its customers new location-based services
- Philips Lighting delivers comprehensive end-to-end capability for retailers and announces partnership with Aisle411, a global leader in digital store mapping services

Frankfurt, Germany – Philips Lighting, a Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) company and global leader in lighting, announces its first connected lighting indoor positioning win in the Middle East with United Arab Emirates (UAE) based retailer aswaaq, one of the world’s most innovative supermarkets and community malls. The new system uses lights that act as a positioning system which allows customers to use smartphones to access new location based services. This empowers the retailer to provide a smooth shopping experience for their customers, which may help boost sales and customer loyalty. Working with Philips on the project is Aisle411, a leader in digital store mapping. Philips Lighting is partnering with the US company to extend its indoor positioning offering to deliver a comprehensive end-to-end capability, including professional services such as digital store mapping, product search and analytics.

The system works by the individual light points transmitting their location through a modulation of light (a technology called Visible Light Communication) that is imperceptible to the human eye but detected by the customer’s smart phone camera. Once the customer downloads the retailer’s app they can choose to access location-based services, such as locate items on their shopping list to an accuracy of 30cm. The data stream is one-way and no personal data is collected by the lighting system.

“We are committed to delivering extra value to our retail customers which in turn, they can use to provide additional benefits to their consumers. By working with leaders in the industry, we are able to deliver a complete suite of services that unlock the full value of Philips LED-based indoor positioning system and location analytics,” said Parik Chopra, Segment Leader Retail and Hospitality for Philips Lighting. “We’re excited to join forces with Aisle411 as our location based services partner and see this brought to life in aswaaq’s Al Bada’a supermarket in Dubai.”

Enhanced shopping experience boosting sales and customer loyalty.
Since the beginning, aswaaq has been focused on technology to achieve a competitive edge. By installing Philips LED-based indoor positioning technology in its Al Bada’a supermarket, Dubai, aswaaq will benefit from a 50% reduction in lighting-based energy consumption, maintenance cost savings and a reduction in its carbon footprint. At the same time, aswaaq customers will benefit from navigating its aisles more easily and accessing new services via their smartphones.

“Our customers’ time is precious and having one of the most advanced indoor positioning technology from Philips Lighting allows us to make shopping faster and more enjoyable,” said Affan Al Khoori, Deputy CEO of aswaaq. “It opens up new possibilities that improve the shopping experience, and empower our staff to operate more efficiently.”

The Philips LED-based indoor positioning system enables customers to use the retailer’s app to receive information relevant to the items around them such as special offers and even look up prices of items on their phone instead of on the shelves. Retail shop managers can use the system to identify the most popular areas of the store to better place products, as well as help streamline tasks such as stock checks and restocking shelves.

A turnkey system for retailers
Philips Lighting is now offering retailers both the lighting infrastructure to deliver the world’s most precise indoor positioning system, as well as the mobile platform and indoor mapping services needed to enable shoppers to quickly find products. To help do this Philips has signed a partnership with Aisle411, a leader in digital store mapping, product search and analytics. Philips will also partner with other companies on location based services for retailers.

"Philips Lighting pioneered a hassle-free, hyper accurate indoor positioning system that when combined with Aisle411 indoor maps and optimized product location data, creates exciting new opportunities for retailers. They can engage with their customers in new ways and understand the path to purchase inside the store," said Nathan Pettyjohn, Founder and CEO of Aisle411.

Aisle 411 and Philips Lighting will work together on the aswaaq project which is due for completion in summer 2016.

Philips named Top Supplier Retail 2016
The innovative indoor positioning technology being piloted by aswaaq was installed by the French retailer Carrefour in its hypermarket in Lille, France. For that project the German retail institute EHI awarded Carrefour with the Retail Technology Award 2016 for Best Customer Experience in February 2016. Subsequently Philips received the Top Supplier Retail 2016 award.
