Oyu Tolgoi takes part in Western Region Forum of Mining sector at Khovd aimag

Jargalant, Khovd – Oyu Tolgoi LLC took part in a mining industry open day and forum for western region in Jargalant soum of Khovd aimag today. The regional event led by Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry, Governor’s office of Khovd aimag with support from Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mineral Resources Authority allowed us to share our operational best practice and social and economic benefits and opportunities to western part of our homeland.

Open day on the main square of provincial center was observed by more than 3,000 people along with major mining companies such as Erdenes Mongol LLC, Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC have contributed and participated to this event. Younger attendants were eager to learn about scholarships and youth education programs by Oyu Tolgoi and its partner institutions while rural businesses and entrepreneurs had learning sessions on procurement procedure and expanded their knowledge on how copper is mined and copper concentrate is shipped.

Oyu Tolgoi team allowed Khovd people to visit underground mine using virtual reality and showcased locally made safety boots, socks to gloves, PPEs, eyewear from our “Made in Mongolia” collection. Open day event was followed by two day discussion and training on bettering the minerals sector policy for public service managers with content and experience sharing on environment preservation and partnerships wins by the major mining companies.

•Since 2010, Oyu Tolgoi has granted tertiary scholarships to almost 1,000 students, and extended educational opportunities to 1,500 students through its Youth Development and internship programmes. These scholarships are mostly announced from May to September of the year at www.ot.mn
•Oyu Tolgoi LLC established the Native Plant Propagation Centre in Khanbogd soum, where environmental specialises plant, protect and grow rare, native seeds of desert steppe region for use in rehabilitating land affected by mining and exploration. Since 2011, more than 131 thousand sapling seedlings, and 95 thousand woody plant seedlings had been planted at Oyu Tolgoi mine site from the centre and used for rehabilitating, green infrastructure and urban settlement in communities around the mine. Until now, Oyu Tolgoi LLC conducted technical rehabilitation in 1,520 hectares of area and biological rehabilitation in 410 hectares of area.
•Oyu Tolgoi collaborated with 898 suppliers in 2018, 618 of which are national businesses that account for 78 percent of total operations procurement spend. Between 2010 and the first quarter of 2019, Oyu Tolgoi spent US$2.8 billion on national procurement.
•Throughout 2018, construction of the underground project continued with the successful completion of several critical path assets, from fully commissioning the ventilation shaft 5 to completing the sinking of Shaft 2, one of the largest shafts on the planet. The detailed engineering design work is near to be completed and overall construction reached the 54%.
