21 Feb 2019 --- Lallemand Health Solutions (LHS) and product development company ComboCap Inc. have entered into a partnership and signed a license agreement for the co-development of a new global probiotics product category that involves dual-chamber, wet-and-dry oral probiotics previously unavailable due to ingredient incompatibility. This new solution seeks to allow a broader nutritional offering to consumers, which promises significant potential for enhanced long term results, improved compliance and the creation of unique products, Lallemand says.

“This is a new step for us as a health-centric organization to research further, develop and create new custom ready-to-market probiotic solutions that positively impact human health,” says Jérôme Panes, LHS President and General Manager.

How it works
A membrane is inserted into a regular capsule, which allows it to carry two different components while simultaneously keeping them separate. This new encapsulation method offers space for the creation of effective product extensions and brand ranges, according to the company.

The key benefits of probiotic ComboCap products containing clinically documented Harmonium, Lafti or Rosell probiotic strains from LHS are:
• an unlimited efficacy of potential dual-dose combinations, including probiotic strains and liquids or pastes such as omega oils, CBD oils and botanical extracts;
• a large chamber size and sealed in liquids;
• a moveable membrane to control and vary dosing.

The company says that with this innovative encapsulation method, companies will be able to add value to their products by making them unique in terms of probiotic combinations and simple to use claims.

“By partnering with Lallemand we will be able to grow probiotic ComboCap products globally, in this newly formed combinations health products category,” says Tobie Louw, CEO of ComboCap. “We look forward to working together to expand new brand and consumer frontiers for the industry in general and for our customers.”

ComboCap previously introduced the world’s first side-by-side, dual-chamber, wet-and-dry combination capsule product with a movable membrane. According to the LHS, “its products represent an entirely new category of combination therapies for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.”

Last year, LHS expanded its portfolio with the development of health solutions specifically for women, utilizing formulations with probiotics from the Lactobacillus species. Moreover, it announced a regulatory breakthrough regarding Health Canada granting two new health claims for the probiotic strain, Lactobacillus helveticus Laftil 10 for sports nutrition. Claims such as “promotes gastrointestinal health in physically active adults” and “helps reduce the incidence of cold-like symptoms in adults with exercise-induced stress” became available for the probiotic strain.
