In 2015, we conducted a global Expression of Interest for the Conveyor to Surface Boxcut and Decline Development Package, openly advertised through the Oyu Tolgoi website. We received number of responses from National and International companies and six internationally recognized underground mining and tunneling organizations were selected to participate in a competitive tender process.

As per Oyu Tolgoi’s procurement policy and other commitments, we encouraged companies to partner with qualified Mongolian companies. Number of companies proposed joint venture proposals and the contract was awarded to Thiess Khishig Arvin Joint Venture LLC (TKAJV), a joint venture between Thiess Mongolia LLC and Khishig Arvin Industrial LLC.

Thiess is one of the world’s largest mining services providers with 80 years’ experience in mining and construction while Khishig Arvin is a Mongolian construction and mining company with 20 years of experience. With 189 employees onsite today, TKAJV is completing the construction of the Conveyor to Surface Boxcut and Decline project which includes approximately 16km of Underground decline development.

We are proud that the TKAJV is committed to developing and upskilling local employees and sharing mining knowledge from the wider Thiess business. Partnering with Thiess, Khishig Arvin is not only gaining knowledge on specifications and procedures of quality assurance/quality control but also improving their health, safety and environment practices.

It is our pleasure to note that Thiess was recognized as one of TOP 100 Tax Payers of Mongolia recently. Ranking at 6thplace, Thiess is one of the many great examples of Oyu Tolgoi contractors that are contributing to the Mongolian economy.
