It’s European Week for Waste Reduction – a great initiative aiming to raise attention on waste related issues and to encourage people acting consciously. Waste – especially food waste – is not only an ethical and economic issue but it also strains the environment and natural resources.

Many studies proof this serious grievance:
Household waste has doubled since 1970 and stayed at a high level for 15 years. For instance in 2011, 500 kg of waste were generated per person in the EU Member States (Eurostat).
Around 88 million tons of food are wasted annually in the EU, with associated costs estimated at 143 billion euros (FUSIONS, 2016).

That is why we have to remind ourselves of the value of natural resources and think of ways to reduce waste arising. Reduce waste, Reuse products, Recycle material. The “3Rs” represent the options which should be considered first when elaborating a waste management strategy. As we at Wessanen want to contribute to a greener future, waste and its reduction is an important issue for us as well. We want to use this occasion to talk about our challenges when it comes to waste related to our supply chain and product packaging. Additionally, we will also take a look at how everyone of us can reduce food waste in daily life . zie meer op

Minimize your food waste

One fifth or 20% of the yearly grocery budget is wasted on average. That's like throwing out 1 in every 5 bags of food you buy. Find out how you can reduce food waste in your daily life.

1. Plan your grocery shopping ahead
A great way to save time and money and reduce food waste is to plan your meals ahead, check your cupboards, fridge and freezer and only buy things that are missing.

2. Make shopping lists
Write down missing things on a shopping list to avoid impulsive behaviour at the grocery shop. This way you only shop products you really need and the right amount of it.

3. Optimize your storage
Find out how to store groceries in the right way. Knowing the best way to store your food will help you make the most of it. Most fruit and vegetables will keep fresher stored in the fridge. Store leftovers in the fridge as well – well wrapped they can be good for up to two days. Additionally, when putting away new groceries bring your old ones to the front. This way you use the older ones first and avoid finding expired products in the corner of your cupboards.
Leftovers

4. Love your leftovers
Being creative with leftovers is a clever way to make the most of your food. Most leftovers go well in a stew or casserole. You could also freeze too much cooked portion wise and heat it up if needed.

5. Be aware of dates
Keep track of sell by and expiration dates. You can plan meals before products expire. But more important: Trust your senses. Look at the products appearance and give it a smell to see if it is probably still fine. A product expired yesterday could still be fine to consume.

6. Keep track of what you throw away
Start a waste diary and note what, when and why you threw away food. This way you’ll find out how you can reduce food waste in your daily life.

Wessanen verwacht 9% omzetstijging in 2016
