JELUPLAST, the natural fiber biocomposite developed and produced by the Rosenberg, Germany-based company JELU-WERK, is opening up new options for durable furniture for both indoor and outdoor use.

Like plastic, JELUPLAST can be molded three-dimensionally, creating design freedom and efficient production processes, yet at the same time, the material offers the positive attributes of wood.

Due to its special properties, this versatile material is suitable both for outdoor and indoor use. JELUPLAST contains no formaldehyde, chlorine, phenol, plasticizers or PVC, consisting solely of food-safe thermoplastic and natural fibers. The proportion of natural fibers can be can vary as required, from 50 to 70 percent. The company produces 45,000 tons of plant fibers per year from the raw materials wood, wheat, oats and bamboo. About 7,000 tons of fibers are processed annually by JELU-WERK to produce bioplastic.

Depending on the type of plastic chosen as matrix material, JELUPLAST may be up to 100 percent biobased. The properties of the thermoplastic matrix determine whether the end product is long-lasting or biodegradable. The properties can be further adjusted by means of additives. Flame retardants can be added as well as additives that make the material more resistant to moisture.

The material can be used for injection molded furniture applications varying from high-quality seating shells and decorative elements to feet for shelves and cabinets.
The material is also suitable for compression molding, to produce - among other things - sturdy substructure components for upholstered furniture, shelving, side and back boards and cabinet doors. Panels and injection molded parts from JELUPLAST can easily be glued, bolted, dyed, coated and welded.
Furniture made from JELUPLAST is also suitable for damp interiors, such as bathrooms, kitchens and saunas, because it is resistant to moisture. The bioplastic’s weather resistance makes it an attractive material for outdoor applications too. It is suitable for garden furniture, exterior railings, fences, wall cladding and decking boards.

JELU-WERK offers biocomposites based on polyethylene, polypropylene, thermoplastic starch (TPS), polylactides (PLA) and other plastics. The fibers used are wood fibers and cellulose fibers. Compounding helps the WPC granulates from JELU to achieve higher compression and to be processed better. The bioplastic has consistent running properties on the machine, facilitating a higher output. JELUPLAST can be processed on conventional injection molding, extrusion, compression molding, blow molding or foaming equipment.(KL)
