The global lactic acid leader can now supply ISO 14040/44 and ISO 14067 compliant environmental footprint data to its customers, helping them assess the environmental impact of their products and report progress on their climate reduction goals.

Corbion, a key ingredient supplier to food and industrial product manufacturers worldwide, has now completed Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for all products from its five lactic acid and derivatives production sites in The Netherlands, Spain, United States, Brazil and Thailand. Having recently finalized its analysis for lactic acid derivatives produced at the company's Montmeló, Spain facility, Corbion has accomplished the daunting task of quantifying the environmental impact associated with manufacturing all lactic acid-based ingredient products in its portfolio.

With this milestone accomplishment, Corbion LCAs now cover approximately 80 percent of the products in its portfolio. The aim is to have LCA data on 100 percent of the products Corbion produces by 2025.

“Completing a comprehensive LCA is a major undertaking,” said Diana Visser, VP Sustainability at Corbion, “and now we have LCAs for all the plants where we produce lactic acid and derivatives. That is great news for Corbion customers because it means we will be able to provide important data to help them more accurately assess the environmental impacts of their end products. Most often, that kind of detailed information is simply not available to them.”

A Life Cycle Assessment is a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact of a product or process, from raw material extraction to disposal. Without conducting LCAs, it is impossible for any company to make fully informed decisions to improve the sustainability of its products. Corbion’s ISO compliance, and its commitment to providing accurate and reliable data to customers, are manifestations of its dedication to transparency, scientific rigor and the use of state-of-the-art methods in its pursuit of improved sustainability.

Corbion customers focused on product emissions receive a carbon footprint breakdown in accordance with ISO 14067; biogenic carbon dioxide uptake values are disclosed separately, along with all GHG emissions released upstream and onsite. This gives customers the option to use only the cradle-to-gate emissions value, or to also account for biogenic carbon uptake released at the end of life, based on the goals of their own study.

“We have persisted in working to complete these LCAs because it is such an essential part of our commitment to transparency,” Ms. Visser added. “Our customers need accurate data and the unvarnished truth in order to make effective decisions. That’s why we make our calculations and analyses in accordance with relevant ISO standards, and are careful to avoid making any statements that could be misleading to customers. We believe clarity is a key to progress.”
