At Kirkland Lake Gold, nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our people and their families. The COVID-19 pandemic represents a serious and unique challenge to citizens across the world. We have been carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving developments related to COVID-19 and have introduced a number of proactive measures with the aim of protecting the people of Kirkland Lake Gold and the communities in which we live and work.
Key measures introduced as part of our COVID-19 strategy are summarized below.
• Remote work: Employees at our sites, and in our offices, that can productively work from home are encouraged to do so and to practice social distancing until March 31, 2020.
• Commercial travel restrictions: All non-essential commercial air travel is suspended until further notice. The restrictions apply to all inter-company travel to sites and between corporate offices using commercial flights, as well as all international business travel. Domestic commercial air travel required for workers to get to and from their work locations is exempt from the restrictions.
• Self-isolation after international travel: Employees having travelled internationally are requested by the Canadian and Australian Governments to self-isolate for 14 days after returning home prior to going to work.
• Temperature and medical screening: Each of our minesites in Canada and Australia are conducting, or are in the process of introducing, temperature and medical screening for all employees and contractors prior to entering the site; this practice will continue until further notice.
• Site and camp hygiene and medical care: We have consulted medical providers to ensure best hygiene practices are in place at all sites, particularly at the Detour Lake Mine accommodation camp. We have also established appropriate processes for the isolation and testing of employees showing signs of illness at site.
• Food safety: In cases where we have a cafeteria environment, the frequency of cleaning is being increased, sandwiches, pastries and desserts will be individually wrapped, and we will limit the availability of utensils, stir sticks and other kitchenware to minimize handling of such items.
• Contractor and supplier risk mitigation: Our approach to managing risks related to COVID-19 has been communicated to our contractors and suppliers to ensure that, in their dealings with our locations, they follow the procedures and protocols that we are introducing.
• Non-essential site visits suspended: Non-essential visits by non-company personnel to any of our sites or offices are suspended until further notice. We are also restricting non-essential site visits by our employees to other companies.
We cannot emphasize enough, that each of our employees has a critical role to play in managing the unprecedented situation presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. First and foremost, if people are sick, they should stay at home and advise their supervisor of their condition. Also, for employees who have travelled outside of Canada, it is very important that they let us know and that they fulfil government-imposed obligations related to self-isolation. Finally, when people are at work, they need to do everything possible to help limit risk, including frequently washing their hands and using hand sanitizer, covering their mouths when coughing and sneezing, disposing of used tissues, and limiting exposure to other people. With regard to the latter, we encourage all of our people to utilize technology wherever possible for their communications, including planning virtual meetings whenever they can.
In terms of travel, our regular charter to Kirkland Lake will continue to be in place and we will have extra flights in place to Timmins and Kirkland Lake on an as-needed basis. For any unavoidable travel between locations in Australia, employees should contact the corporate office in Toronto for charter information.
These measures represent our best judgment, at this moment, about the right steps to take in order to reduce risk for our people. We plan to provide updates on the rapidly evolving developments related to COVID-19 as information becomes available.
We are committed to helping keep our employees and their families healthy and safe and ask that they do everything they can as well. As a company, we need to work together for the benefit of everyone at Kirkland Lake Gold and our communities.
