Parijs/Amsterdam, 16 november 2016 - Total en Corbion maken bekend dat zij hun krachten bundelen met het oog op de ontwikkeling van bioplastics. Daartoe richten de beide partners een 50/50 joint venture op voor de productie en marketing van PLA (polymelkzuur). Total en Corbion zullen een grootschalige PLA-polymerisatiefabriek bouwen met een capaciteit van 75.000 ton per jaar op de locatie van Corbion in Thailand. Op deze locatie bevindt zich al een productie-eenheid voor lactide (PLA-monomeer), die onderdeel zal worden van de joint venture. Corbion levert het melkzuur dat noodzakelijk is voor de productie van PLA en lactide.

De nieuwe onderneming wordt gevestigd in Nederland en de start van de bedrijfsactiviteiten is voorzien voor het eerste kwartaal van 2017, onder voorbehoud van goedkeuring door de toezichthouders.

Deze investering is in lijn met onze One Total ambitie om uit te breiden op het gebied van biobrandstoffen en bioplastics naast onze meer traditionele olie- en gasproducten," aldus Bernard Pinatel, president-directeur van de Total-divisie Raffinage & Chemie. "Corbion, met haar unieke positie in de waardeketen van melkzuur en biopolymeren, is voor Total een natuurlijke keus. Dankzij de joint venture kunnen we een innovatief materiaal leveren dat 100% hernieuwbaar en biologisch afbreekbaar is en daarmee voldoet aan duurzaamheidsvereisten."

Tjerk de Ruiter, CEO van Corbion, voegde daaraan toe: "PLA is een van de eerste hernieuwbare en biologisch afbreekbare polymeren die kunnen concurreren met bestaande polymeren. Deze joint venture combineert de technische expertise, marketingkennis en leidende polymeerpositie van Total met de expertise van Corbion op het gebied van melkzuur en biopolymeren. Daardoor zullen we in staat zijn innovatieve producten te leveren en de marktacceptatie te versnellen."

PLA is een biobased en biologisch afbreekbaar polymeer op basis van hernieuwbare grondstoffen (suiker of zetmeel) die via fermentatie in melkzuur worden omgezet. PLA wordt voornamelijk toegepast in verpakkingsmateriaal voor voedingsproducten, in tafelgerei en textiel voor eenmalig gebruik, en in talrijke andere branches, zoals de olie- en gasindustrie, de elektronicasector, de auto-industrie en het 3D-printsegment.

PLA is een snelgroeiend segment in de polymerenmarkt met naar schatting een gemiddelde jaarlijkse groei van 10% tot 15% tot 2025.

De joint venture neemt de bestaande productiefaciliteit voor ongeveer 40 miljoen dollar over van Corbion. Naar verwachting kan het bedrijf daardoor een eerdere afschrijving terugdraaien, bleek uit een toelichting op de deal. De netto-investering van Corbion voor de ontwikkeling van bioplastics neemt door de joint venture af van 100 miljoen naar 30 miljoen euro.

Yesterday, just days after lactic acid producer Corbion announced that the groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of construction of its new PLA polymerization plant in Thailand, the company sprang another surprise: the new plant will be a joint venture.

French oil company Total and Corbion are partnering in a new joint venture for the production of PLA bioplastic in Thailand. The partners will each hold a 50% stake in the new company.

lactide monomerTogether, Total and Corbion will build and operate a world-class PLA polymerization plant with a capacity of 75,000 tons per year at existing Corbion's lactide production site in in Rayong, Thailand. The lactide production unit in included in the deal and will also become part of the joint venture. Plans for ts expansion have also been made. Corbion will supply the lactic acid necessary for the production of the PLA and the lactide.
The new company will be headquartered in the Netherlands and will launch operations in the 1st quarter of 2017, subject to regulatory approvals.
PLA is a biobased, biodegradable polymer obtained by fermenting renewable resources (sugar or starch) to produce lactic acid. PLA is mainly used for food packaging, disposable tableware and textiles, as well as in numerous other industries such as oil and gas, electronics, automotive and 3D printing.

"PLA is one of the first renewable, biodegradable polymers able to compete with existing polymers,” said Tjerk de Ruiter, CEO of Corbion.
It is also a fast-growing polymer market segment, with an estimated average annual growth rate of 10 to 15% to 2025.

“The joint venture, which will combine Total's technical and marketing knowledge and leading position in polymers with Corbion's expertise in lactic acid and biopolymers, will enable us to supply innovative products and will accelerate market acceptance," De Ruiter said.

The new PLA polymerization plant will be constructed using proprietary polymerization technology and technology supplied by Sulzer Chemtech Ltd. of Switzerland at the plant. The latter company will also be responsible for providing key equipment for the new plant.
