Passenger

- Events in Japan, Africa and the Middle East continued to weigh on demand to and from the regions.

Passenger business
In May 2011 traffic increased by 4.9% for capacity up by 5.9%, leading to a slight 0.7 point decline in load factor to 79.8%. The Group carried 6.58 million passengers (+6.1%). Unit revenue per available seat kilometer (RASK) excluding currency was higher than in the previous year.

- On the Americas network, traffic was very dynamic (+7.8%) for capacity up by 8.2%. The load factor remained at the high level of 86.1% (-0.3 points).
- Traffic on the Asia network rose by 2.7% for capacity up by 5.8%. The load factor fell by 2.4 points to 81.2%, with the situation in Japan continuing to weigh.
- The Africa and Middle East network remained affected by the various geopolitical crises. Traffic declined by 5.3% for capacity down by 2.5%. As a result, the load factor lost 2.1 points to 71.4%.
- The Caribbean and Indian Ocean network was dynamic with traffic up by 6.7% for a capacity increase of 6.9%. The load factor remained unchanged at 78.5% (-0.1 point).
- The European network was also dynamic with traffic increasing by 8.2% for capacity up by 7.6%. The load factor gained 0.4 points to 74.6%.

Cargo business
The cargo business was affected by the unrest in Africa and the Middle East as well as a situation of overcapacity on departures from Asia. Against this backdrop, the group continued to control capacity closely, limiting growth to 2.7%. With traffic down 1.4%, the load factor (down 2.9 points) remained at the high level of 67.8%. Unit revenue per available ton kilometer (RATK) excluding currency posted a very slight decline.

Recent developments

Virgin Atlantic signed a 12-year component support contract with AFI KLM E&M on its fleet of Airbus A330s. In February 2011, the airline took delivery of the first in a series of ten aircraft which will progressively come into revenue service through to the end of 2012. The agreement signed with AFI KLM E&M includes component repair, pool access and a Main Base Kit at London-Heathrow.
Air France-KLM, Delta Air Lines and Alitalia have announced a 7 to 9% reduction in available capacity this autumn in terms of passenger transport between Europe, the U.S.and Canada, in response to a significant increase in the cost of fuel and changing seasonal demand.
Air France and KLM have launched "Connect", an exclusive service, free of charge, without registration or subscription, giving customers information about changes and incidents concerning their trip. Air France and KLM are the first airlines to offer a service of proactive information to their passengers throughout the network on such a large scale.
Since its launch in November 2009, close to 700,000 passengers have travelled in the new Premium Voyageur cabin. This new travel class has been available on an Air France Airbus A380 over the past few days.
Air France recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Dakar route and has inaugurated a new service to Orlando out of Paris-CDG with three weekly flights.
